Scorpions in the bathroom?

So a little over a week ago I ventured into the bathroom to take a shower and as I walked in a little reddish brown thing caught my eye. It happened to be a scorpion caught in a spider web. How sweet! The little 12 year old boy within me came to life. Mind you spiders and scorpions creep me out but at the same time there is something amazing about these creepy creatures. So I got really close and tried to mess with it a little but to no avail, it had already succumbed to the spiders poison. So I got a few pictures but of poor quality. Here is one...
So GREAT the little guy is dead! I let him hang there for a bout a week and decided it was probably time to clean him up and get rid of the spider too. I got some bug spray and took care of the spider and then cleaned up the corps. I then decided to take care of some laundry that was laying on the floor. To my surprise I found another friend under the sheets this time he was a little more feisty.

So Pete and I poked him with a broom handle a few times (I think Pete still has some little boy in him too, even though he is an old man). We then took the same bug spray and put an end to this little creature as well. In hind sight I wish I had not offed our ally, the spider in true exterminator style. The spider my have proved helpful in future invasions.

One last thought on the whole ordeal... I thought scorpions lived in deserts and Texas not on the Adriatic. What kind of place am I living in? How can I be careful like my parents told me, if I like in the vicinity of a scorpion den?

My new city, neighborhood, street and home

So as you all probably know, I made it to Rijeka just fine. My team and I have had the last two weeks to settle in, apply for work visas, meet a few students, and travel to Zagreb (for a national staff conference). Today I had my first real opportunity to explore my new city by myself. As I was our walking around I took a few pictures that I though I would share with you all. This is where I live...

Everything here is so crowded and most buildings are tall so it is difficult to get a good view. This is a small glimpse of the Adriatic Sea, through some buildings.

These are the two best view I could find today. It is only a small part of Rijeka (300,000 plus people).

Here are a few shots of my neighborhood...

This is my street...
This is my home...There is your tour. We do have more than one room in our apartment...they (kitchen and bedroom) just weren't clean enough for pic posting.
